May 1827

3rd May/27. Divided the class of catechumens at P. Vale, in hope of bringing them forward better than when all in one class.

5th May. Rode to Town & had a good time in the Band Meeting.

6th Sabbath - Preached to a large & attentive congregation; afterwards administered the sacrament to a large number - visited the Sunday School which continues till 6 o'clock, and at 7 had a full chapel & a season of refreshing from the presence of the Lord.

10th May/27. Catechised as usual.

13th Rode to Mount Young - had good attendance; gave many tickets. Received 5 candidates and reached home about six P.M.

22nd Spent most of the Sabbath at Union chapel - many Negroes present, and it was painful to see them so sleepy owing to their being worked in the night and thus deprived of proper rest. I recd a candidate, baptised a child, gave Tickets and hoped for prosperity. The little Negroes usually catechised here under a large tree adjoining the chapel during class meeting immediately after public service, are now detained at home to be instructed by a catechist employed by the Bishop for the whole parish. The managers & owners having pledged themselves to the new plan some time ago, as they inform me, in general, when I apply to have children as well as the adults.

24th May/27 - Have been busily employed in re-writing class papers; and regulating the spiritual affairs of our large Societies in this quarter of the island. Attended this evening at P. Vale - the children can nearly repeat the ten commandments in addition to their former little stock.

28th On the Sabbath I read prayers and preached at Biabou; large congregation renewed tickets of many members, recd a candidate & excluded the son of one of our Leaders for an illicit connexion. Preached at Calliaqua in the evening to a large & very attentive congregation and retired to rest rather late, and attended by plenty of mosquitoes. This morning by day-break set off for Home & arrive for breakfast.

31st Catechised as usual.
