President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference. George Osborn (1808-91) was born in Rochester, Kent, the son of a draper who was also a Wesleyan class leader and steward. Osborn was educated at Brompton and entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1828. Osborn was an outspoken supporter of Jabez Bunting and played a leading role in the expulsions which followed the fly sheets controversy of 1844-49. He served two terms as President (1863 and 1881) and was one of the secretaries for Foreign Missions between 1851 and 1867. From 1868 to 1885, Osborn was Professor of Divinity at Richmond College, London. He was also a founder member of the Evangelical Alliance.
